Background

In 2009, Health and Health Care among District of Columbia Youth, a community health needs assessment conducted by the RAND Corporation identified oral health as a priority for children in the District of Columbia. In response, Children’s National Health System, through its Child Health Advocacy Institute (CHAI), collaborated with the Office of Head Start, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Chartered Health DC, Child Health Center Board, Consumer Health Foundation, and the Jessie Ball duPont Fund to pilot advocacy projects that addressed the systemic issues contributing to limited access to oral health care for children in the District. As a result of this project, the DC Pediatric Oral Health Coalition was formed. Thereafter, DentaQuest Foundation funded the 2011-2012 planning year which led to the development of a 2-year action plan. The Coalition concluded the 2-year action plan in 2014 but will continue improving oral health efforts by implementing a new action plan.
